Surf Program

Flying Start Children's Therapy and Ocean Mind have collaborated to provide a therapeutic surf program in Torquay.

Goals for the program are individual and extend beyond learning to surf. There are so many more benefits to spending time in the ocean! Surf Therapy centers around skill development, capacity building, mentoring and fun.

The sessions are available to children 8 years and older, and maintain a 1:1 support ratio, allowing participants to progress at their own pace.

Ocean Mind is a therapeutic surfing charity that enriches people’s mental health, relationships and potential through surfing. They are committed to developing evidence-based programs that create life-changing experiences for people experiencing mental health challenges, social isolation and disabilities.

This Surf Program supports all areas of gross motor development including balance, core stability, strength and coordination, with a range of other goals, including:

  • the use of mindfulness to support stress reduction and improve mental health,

  • support participants with emotional regulation strategies, and

  • teach basic beach and ocean safety skills.

In addition to the physical elements of surfing and spending time amongst the waves, participants will learn and practice social skills with program peers, therapists and mentors, and enjoy the mental health benefits of the ocean.
